book Description by David Schouten
In Shaping the Future: Success Factors for Startups in AI, Healthcare and
Blockchain, a group of 72 UC Berkeley students analyzes a total of 212 companies
to determine which factors are the biggest contributors to their success (or failure).
This study was conducted as part of the Spring 2024 edition of the ENGIN 183/283
class at UC Berkeley, titled “Future of Technology: How Innovators Critically
Examine Game Changing and Time Wasting Technologies”. Students chose
companies to analyze from the Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, and Healthcare
industries and used a combination of literature review, netnography analysis, and
case studies to determine which factors contribute the most to a company’s success
or failure. New in this edition of the book is the inclusion of personal profiles of a few
futurist entrepreneurs who describe what success means for them and how they
hope to achieve it.
After students had individually created business and futurist profiles, they were
assigned to one of the student teams: Analytics, Design, Editorial, Marketing or
Production. The Analytics team focused on creating analyses, graphs and insights
from all the data collected in the business profiles. The Design team came up with
beautiful layouts and color schemes for all the pages. Editorial checked all the text in
the book to avoid any typing errors and to align the writing style. Marketing came up
with a beautiful plan to promote our book. Finally, the Production team brought
everything together and combined all team deliverables into the book that is in front
of you.
The primary purpose of this book is to help inform the reader about what factors
contribute most to a startup’s success or failure. We can imagine it may be useful for
new entrepreneurs to know where to allocate their resources, for past founders to
understand what went wrong (or right!), or for job seekers trying to determine
whether a startup is worth joining. Whatever your use case may be, we hope that our
insights bring you new perspectives and help to make your projects thrive.
